Complex Case Management is a full-day, hands-on course for dental therapists ready to take on the cases that usually get referred away: deep subgingival margins, the last tooth in the arch, and restorations that need real cuspal coverage, not just a filled cavity.

This isn't a lecture day. You'll be hands-on for almost all of it: isolating genuinely difficult cases with rubber dam, restoring two deep margin cases using two different techniques, and building a cuspal overlay with proper morphology. Small groups, expert 1:1 support, and the same collaborative, no-question-too-basic atmosphere The Modern Therapist is known for.

Course aims

Develop clinical confidence and technique repertoire for isolating and restoring complex cases predictably and to a high standard (GDC Outcome C)

Judge, confidently and appropriately, when a complex case sits within your own scope of practice (GDC Outcome D)

Apply rubber dam technique to achieve reliable isolation on a deep margin and a difficult-to-access last tooth

Adapt and modify a matrix band to manage a deep margin restoration, and apply the matrix-in-matrix technique as an alternative

Construct a cuspal overlay using the cusp-by-cusp technique, restoring accurate occlusal morphology

Plan and sequence a complex restorative appointment realistically, from isolation through to the finished restoration

On The Day

Three hands-on stages, in one day

Rubber dam and isolation

Isolating a deep margin, then the last tooth in the arch: clamp selection, dam management around a difficult access point, and troubleshooting when isolation doesn't go to plan the first time.

Deep margin restoration: two techniques

Restore a deep margin case by modifying and adapting a matrix band, then look at the matrix-in-matrix technique as an alternative way of managing the same margin.

Cuspal coverage and morphology

A second case with a deep box and cuspal coverage, building the cusp back using the cusp-by-cusp technique, with real attention to occlusal and functional morphology.
